<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Desire to
build honest relationships between producers and catering businesses, and
actually get growers and chefs together, but recognising time constraints and
business priorities will make this difficult</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Need to
understand the challenges faced on both sides, particularly </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">financial pressures.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Local growers
have a brilliant story to tell which will attract customers, need to get that
story out there!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Lack of transport
infrastructure – how to get local produce to local businesses.</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Kate Shaw spent at least a day
co-ordinating produce list, collecting ingredients from the 7 gardens and
delivering them to The Project Café for this one meal.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">We talked
about setting up a volunteer delivery scheme - with volunteers paid in café meals/veg bags - b</span><span style="font-family: Arial;">ut there was a big questions mark
around whether this is reliable or sustainable. Locavore uses the Oatcake (their
own local currency) as a way of paying people to do deliveries, but it's not
always possible to retain volunteers.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Need to
overcome perception about high cost of organic local produce by circulating
clear price lists to businesses and demonstrating that produce is high quality and tastier.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Catering
businesses could also send wish lists to growers.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Need to acknowledge that some crops are more financially viable eg. it’s hard for small scale growers to
compete with larger farms on the price of potatoes.</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">But the example of Locavore’s Urban Croft has shown that
nano-growers could supply unusual salad and herb crops that are more expensive to buy through normal wholesalers.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial; text-indent: -5.65pt;">Quality control is essential eg. salads would need to be washed in advance of supplying them to restaurants</span></li>
</ul>

The Scottish Government have launched the consultation for the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Bill. This is the last chance for you to influence government policy in areas including:<br />
<ol>
<li>A right for communities to take over underused public sector land and assets.</li>
<li>A Community right to buy in urban areas.</li>
<li>Changes to allotment law.</li>
</ol>
If we act together as a network we have more chance of influencing policy.<br />
<br />
The consultation document is 75 pages long and has 71 questions – however, FCFCG have produced a 3 page briefing highlighting the 23 questions that they think are most relevant to community gardens. <a class="doclink" href="http://www.farmgarden.org.uk/component/docman/doc_download/768-communityempowerment">Please click here to download this briefing</a>. The consultation is open until January 24th - given that this covers the Christmas period, time to respond is limited. <br />
<br />
FCFCG are hosting a further explanation and discussion of how this affects projects on <strong>December 13th in Glasgow</strong>, in association with the Glasgow Local Food Network. An MSP will be attending this event to give advice on how to influence politicians, both at a policy level and by organising a visit to your project. If you would like to attend the (free) event, please <a href="http://www.farmgarden.org.uk/events/fcfcg-events-in-scotland/discussion-community-growing-and-the-community-empowerment-bill-glasgow?view=Events">go to the registration page</a>.<br />

<br />
Alex
and Annechien have been questioning and investigating an artist’s role
in projects related to food, community growing and urban agriculture in
The Hague (The Netherlands) and Glasgow. They have interviewed many
groups and individuals to find out more about what is happening in the
field of urban agriculture and how an artist does or could function in
urban agriculture projects. How much responsibility should artists have?
Are they the right people to be asked to solve social and economic
issues?<br />
<br />
The documentary explores the influence of political, social and
spatial developments that relate to urban agriculture and the issues
arising from urban agriculture projects and the impacts on both cities
and their residents.<br />
<br />
The documentary has been produced in collaboration with Gert-Jan
Gerlach (CulturAllTV), a film-maker based in The Hague and has been
supported by CCA, Glasgow, Stroom Den Haag; Centre for Art, Design and
Architecture and Fonds 1818.<br />
<br />
The screening will be followed by a discussion about issues raised
in the film involving the artists and Francis McKee (Director of the
CCA, Glasgow). <br />
<br />
We would like to thank all the individuals and
organisations who gave their time to speak to us and share their ideas
and insights into urban agriculture, not all of whom who are included in
the film but have all helped shaped the film. <a href="http://agrowingexchange.wordpress.com/">http://agrowingexchange.wordpress.com</a><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This book
lifts the lid on the unsavoury reality of our current food system
including horsemeat in processed beef products, the unsustainable
movement of food round the globe, and how supermarket shopping generates
massive waste. It’s an indictment of a food system that is out of
control.</span></div>
<span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a>But this is
also a hopeful book as it describes the local food movement in Scotland
and how demands for change are growing in strength to re-capture
control of the food system. It also shows how individuals can take
simple steps to switch to more sustainable and healthy eating and
evaluates what the Scottish Government is doing to address these
profoundly important issues.<br />
<br />
The author, Mike Small, of The Fife Diet, said, <em>"The book is not about the Fife Diet, it’s about the wider
movement and the response to the collapsing dysfunctional industry that
thrives on maintaining a market for super-cheap processed food and
ignores the consequences to health and planet."</em><br />

<br />
Carol Craig, the <a href="http://www.centreforconfidence.co.uk/carolsblog.php?p=aWQ9ODcy" target="_blank">Centre for Confidence</a> Chief Executive said, <i>"When Mike suggested 'Scotland’s Local Food Revolution' as a title I was
happy to go along with it but I must admit that I had a slight niggling
doubt that it wouldn’t quite live up to its name. But it does. Indeed
the thing that has particularly bowled me over is his description of <span style="color: #741b47;"><b>all
the activity that is currently happening in Scotland on eating and
growing local food</b>.</span>"</i><br />

In August 2012 <a href="http://thehiddengardens.org.uk/" target="_blank">The Hidden Gardens</a> joined forces with <a href="http://www.fifediet.co.uk/" target="_blank">The Fife Diet</a> for
<a href="http://thehiddengardens.org.uk/culture-kitchen-relay.php" target="_blank">Culture Kitchen Relay</a>: a unique recipe relay around Scotland to
celebrate the country's food and the talented people behind harvesting,
cooking and sharing it.<br />
<br />
14 days, more than 18 stops, 3 women and 1
van - the ingredients assembled to make an unforgettable road trip
celebrating food growing, home cooking and seasonal ingredients.
Destinations included community growing projects, schools, farms and
local food producers.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Clem Sandison (artist and creative producer
of Culture Kitchen) teamed up with Najma Anwar (passionate cook and
member of The Hidden Gardens Cultural Cookery Group) and Kathryn
VandenBerg (community gardener and co-ordinator of SAGE) to embark upon
an epic road trip around Scotland passing recipes from one community to
another.<br />
<br />
The focus of the recipe exchange was family dishes that
have been passed and also some new recipe creations, all based on local
produce, including home-grown fruit and vegetables, foraged seaweed,
hand crafted cheeses, freshly landed fish and seafood, and locally
farmed meat, oats and dairy. And, best of all, Clem and the team
documented all the cooking tips and stories that they heard along the
way.<br />

Each interviewee gets the opportunity to become interviewer for the next <b>Talking Turnips</b>, and can chose a local food project that they want to interview.<br />

This month, Roz Corbett, who is a volunteer for <a href="http://www.urbanroots.org.uk/" target="_blank">Urban Roots</a> and <a href="http://www.dennistoundiggers.org.uk/" target="_blank">Dennistoun Diggers</a>, interviews Tim Cowen from <a href="http://www.woodlandscommunitygarden.org.uk/" target="_blank">Woodlands Community Garden</a>. If you're interested in being interviewed, or being an interviewer, please email <a href="mailto:rosalind.corbett@gmail.com" target="_blank">Roz</a>
<b><br /></b><br />
<br />
<b></b><br />
<a name='more'></a><b>Roz:</b> Tim, can you tell me a little more about the how Woodlands Community Garden works.
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim:</b> The garden has just finished its second full year of growing. It first began to take shape in 2009-10, when it was identified as a potential space for a community garden. Before that, the site had been derelict for many years, and had become quite wild with plants and rubbish. Now, the site is filled with raised beds, a polytunnel, a herb bed, a communal composting area, a community hub with an outdoor stage and much much more. There are 40 plot holders who each have a share in the raised beds, and community gardening sessions everyone Wednesday and Sundays for anyone who wants to help look after the communal areas of the garden..
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>Roz:</b> What was your highlight of 2012 for the garden?
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim:</b> Our harvest festival in early September was a very beautiful day. Over 400 people came and stayed for the whole day to take part in activities, eat food etc. We had a grand piano, a choir, live bands, a garden gnome tour, storytelling, photography workshop, living costumes, food cooked in the clay over, food stalls and more. The whole day was brilliant and we managed it on a shoestring, largely thanks to the many volunteers who helped out.
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>Roz:</b> Sounds brilliant. What's the inspiration that makes you do all this work?
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim:</b> The money!! Ha. No, not really! Food brings people together. It brings people together to work collectively to create something that is both sustainable and equitable. People are starting to understand that food has a significant environmental impact, and they can address that quite practically. But growing food communally also has huge social benefits which is just as important.<br />
<br />
<b>Roz:</b> What is the one thing that you would like to see happen to Local Food in Glasgow in 2013?
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim:</b> It's vital that environmental projects link more into social justice movements. Next year, welfare cuts and the recession are going to really bite, and there will be a growing need for food banks and places where people who cant afford to eat can get healthy food. Community gardens and other local food projects should make this a bigger priority.
For example, Woodlands Community Garden are running cookery classes at the moment, and we've linked these into support for the night shelter run by Unity. People on the course cook a meal together, and learn cookery skills, and that food is then given to the night shelter for homeless asylum seekers. We'd really like to see people from the night shelter come and take part in the cookery sessions too. It's really important that all the courses and opportunities that we provide are free because it makes things available to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford going to a night class.
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>Roz:</b> Yes, I agree, it's really important that local food should be for all. But how do we achieve that?
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim:</b> We need to be bolder and more creative. We need to link up with social justice projects and work together to see how we can support those movements. And we can draw on examples from other countries. In Greece at the moment there are lots of social centres being set up to distribute vegetables and seeds and food. We should learn more from these projects. When we're organising events, such as the seed swap, we should make sure that we're providing a full range of support so that people have access to equipment, and can learn the skills and gain confidence to grow their own food.
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>Roz:</b> OK great. Great ideas. What's your one gardening tip to share with others who are starting to grow their own food?
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim:</b> Get things started off indoors early in the season. We have a very short growing season in Glasgow, and you can really boost your crop by starting off seeds indoors. But don't sow everything at once! Try to plan what to sow when so that you get a good crop throughout the year.
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>Roz:</b> Good tips. So, finally, whats your favourite vegetable and your best recipe of the year?
<b> </b><br />
<b>Tim: </b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b></b></div>
<b>
</b>Well, I'd find it difficult to live without potatoes. But I like them all! Kale, peas, cabbage - its hard to pick just one. And my top recipe: Green Tomato Chutney - I've made loads of it.<br />
<br />
Tim Cowen is Project Manager at <a href="http://www.woodlandscommunitygarden.org.uk/" target="_blank">Woodlands Community Garden</a>. In the New Year he'll be interviewing another member of Glasgow Local Food Network.</div>

The Scottish Government opposes GM foods and so our good friends over at <a href="http://www.fifediet.co.uk/">The Fife Diet</a> have written an open letter to the new Environment Minister Paul
Wheelhouse MSP and to James Withers, Scotland Food and Drink’s CEO urging
them to re-articulate the Scottish Government’s opposition to GM foods.<br />
<br />
You can sign the letter on <a href="http://www.fifediet.co.uk/2012/12/10/gm-free-scotland/" target="_blank">The Fife Diet website</a> and we have copied the text for you to read below (to follow the links please visit the Fife Diet website!).<br />

<a name='more'></a><i>While the UK government may have decided to ignore overwhelming

report <a href="http://www.foeeurope.org/GMOs/Who_Benefits/who_benefits_full_report_2010.pdf">‘Who Benefits from GM Crops’</a>,
which examined the evidence for these claims, and exposed that
genetically modified (GM) crops could actually increase carbon emissions
while failing to feed the world.</b> GM crops are responsible for
huge increases in the use of pesticides in the US and South America,
intensifying fossil fuel use. The cultivation of GM soy to feed factory
farmed animals is also contributing to widespread deforestation in South
America, causing massive climate emissions. The report exposes that
globally GM crops remain confined to less than 3% of agricultural land
and more than 99% are grown for animal feed and agrofuels, rather than
food. There is still not a single commercial GM crop with increased
yield, drought-tolerance, salt-tolerance, enhanced nutrition or other
beneficial traits long promised by biotech companies. <a href="http://www.foeeurope.org/GMOs/Who_Benefits/who_benefits_full_report_2010.pdf">Read the full report here.</a></i></span></li>
