Growing Communities - local food and social justice

This event will involve a day of workshops and discussions, followed by a social evening of films, food and music and will take place on Thursday 20 June from 2pm.

This is a chance to meet others working in community food and social justice movements in Glasgow and to help shape stronger responses to the current welfare reforms.

Glasgow Local Food Network will be hosting their annual seed swap as part of Glasgow Allotments Forum Potato day at the Pearce Institute on Sunday 24 February

Bring along your saved seed or any surplus packets from last year and pick up some tasty new seeds for this year, including some heritage varieties, and get your hand's on this year’s seed potatoes!

Wishes and Wants!

Dear Local Food People,

Locavore would like to invite you to the next meeting of the Glasgow Local Food Network at The Glad Cafe on the Southside on Sunday 10^th February from 5.30pm – 10pm. It will be an evening of networking, experience sharing, short films and some tasty local food.

The event is being hosted for the network by Locavore with the theme “Wishes and Wants”. It will aim to identify how different organisations and individuals can form mutually beneficial partnerships which take forward sustainable local food in Glasgow.

Culture Kitchen Relay

In August 2012 The Hidden Gardens joined forces with The Fife Diet for Culture Kitchen Relay: a unique recipe relay around Scotland to celebrate the country's food and the talented people behind harvesting, cooking and sharing it.

14 days, more than 18 stops, 3 women and 1 van - the ingredients assembled to make an unforgettable road trip celebrating food growing, home cooking and seasonal ingredients. Destinations included community growing projects, schools, farms and local food producers.

Talking Turnips #1 Woodlands Community Garden

This is the first interview for Talking Turnips and its setting off a chain reaction of interviews amongst the many Local Food projects in Glasgow.

We'll be posting an interview every month (or more often if you're lucky) from a Local Food project in Glasgow, by a Local Food project in Glasgow. Each interviewee gets the opportunity to become interviewer for the next Talking Turnips, and can chose a local food project that they want to interview.

Open Letter on GM

Last week Environment Secretary Owen Paterson backed introducing genetically modified (GM) food production in the UK. In his speech he said there were "real environmental benefits" to the technology and dismissed concerns about its impact on human health as "complete nonsense".


The Scottish Government opposes GM foods and so our good friends over at The Fife Diet have written an open letter to the new Environment Minister Paul Wheelhouse MSP and to James Withers, Scotland Food and Drink’s CEO urging them to re-articulate the Scottish Government’s opposition to GM foods.

Gasland - a review

Last week about 40 people came along to The Glad Cafe (an amazing new music and cultural venue on the Southside of Glasgow!) to watch the award winning documentary Gasland.

We were treated to some fantastic food - a vegetable curry and chapatis - all made from locally grown food supplied by Glasgow Locavore and cooked by Clem and Kate (thanks guys!)

I hadn't seen the film before but I had heard a lot about it and how it really highlights the dash for gas in the US as a result of the political desire for energy security and domestic energy supplies. This has seen huge corporations frack there way from state-to-state resulting in the huge negative health and environmental impacts that the film documents.
